The Protestant culture was largely introduced to Korea by missionaries sent by the American Presbyterian churches. To the Korean society, Calvinism was not seen as a sect of Christianity sprouted from Roman Catholicism, but rather Christianity itself. As Calvinism grew, studies regarding John Calvin, the most influential believer and reformer, and his theology became the backbone of the Korean church. One hundred years later, the Presbyterian denomination still remains the most dominant church in Korea and thus, after celebrating Calvin’s 500th birthday, it is crucial to analyze the influence of Calvin in the Korean church. This presentation reflects the past development, the present situation, and the future direction of the Korean church through a Calvinistic lens.
